Flora & Fawna slingshot themselves back on the scene with their anthemic comeback single, “Long Shot”. As their first track in almost 2 years and produced alongside L.A.-based Misha Hercules (Maggie Rogers, Wavves, Steve Lacy, Rostam Batmanglij), it marks a dramatic sonic leap from their earlier releases.
Musically, the song is an ode to upbeat disco and early 2010s indie pop; with a driving beat and an infectious bassline to match. Ethereal synths blend with a juicy strummed guitar to add a soft day-dream-like quality to the danceable foundation. From tongue-in-cheek verses to soaring choruses, “Long Shot” really feels like a burst of fresh air on a hot summer day.
Lyrically, “Long Shot” experiments with the idea that whoever you are with, at the moment could be “the one”, but maybe not a perfect fit. Lead singer/songwriter Lili Hickman wrote the tune as a confession of love for their partner, a well-known actor at the time. Although that romance inevitably ended, Lili met the other half of Flora & Fawna, producer/multi-instrumentalist Mason Ables, through the separation; showing you that even through tumultuous times, “the one”, may be right around the corner.
Lili’s thoughts while writing the song:
“When I wrote this song I was trying to compete with people that we’re in a much different world than me. I would fly out to set and see my partner filming, and I would get lost comparing myself to the actors and actresses around me. I came out of my own insecurities and created ‘Long Shot’ as a comfort to me, the long-distance relationship, and my partner; all in an effort to show that though our relationship wasn’t perfect, I loved it all the same. Eventually, we fell apart, because that was ultimately what both of us needed. Now I’m putting out ‘Long Shot’ years later as a reminder that there is no perfect person or relationship and knowing that makes loving yourself that much easier.”
Entering this new musical era, the band is bringing a much brighter, indie-pop-infused sound, taking influence from the likes of Charli XCX, Harry Styles, Arcade Fire, and Magdelena Bay. Their upcoming EP “Monarchs of the Ice Age” will be out just in time for the peak of summer, taking this lucid, vivid sound to incredible new heights.
